about

Recorded in 1976. Unreleased until 2021. Original notes from the As-Shams Archive:

"Balumbi was formed by Levitt Mokgale and Panic Ike Maphisa in the year 1964 while they were both still in high school. One sunny day, late in the afternoon, they sat under the shade of a tree where they soon captured the sound of Malombo, one of the well-established groups in South Africa.

The next moment they found themselves singing and pounding rusty ashbins as a backing. As from that day on, they never looked back and they joined musical plays in order to raise some money to buy their own musical instruments. In the year 1973, somehow they managed to buy instruments and the band proceeded well until Levitt opened his own business down at Pietersberg and left. A young man by the name of Eric Miya introduced himself to have more interest in music. He says he was born with music and will die with music.

Levitt and Panic are both Black Belt Judokas. They invented their own style called WISAA, which is completely different from the martial art because its Kias (shouts) are Africanised. In the track called “Mmapaseka,” Mr Ike Maphisa recalls the time when he practiced WISAA day and night and reveals his natural art of self-defence for the first time in this album. Our music is easy to understand for it is our "soul" aim to entertain you.

Eric Miya was born in the Transkei and had his education there. He was also an actor in numerous plays before joining Balumbi. Panic Ike Maphisa was born in Benoni and went to Katlehong township for the first time in September 1951. He has been singing and composing songs since his early ages. He wrote and directed the Nobuhle and Hope musical plays, which ran for two and a half years successfully. After closing the final curtains of his two productions, Panic took music seriously until he managed to produce this album.

The Balumbi-Lumbi wish to express their gratitude to all those who gave every assistance in making arrangements for recording. All numbers and cover story written by Panic Ike Maphisa."
